THE
"VOX" THAT ROCKS!
Pandora's Vox to perform at Long Island
Pride Festival!
by Jed
Ryan
Pandora's
Vox is hot! Voted "Best Musical
Group" at the 2001 Long Island Pride Press Awards, this
four-member girl group has achieved envied status as both
local celebrities as well as serious musicians. Pandora's
Vox can be seen regularly at such favorite spots as Forevergreen,
Shi Bar, and Auntie
M's. They've also gone over the bridge to show their
talents at such Manhattan nightspots as Henrietta on the
Hudson, one of New York City's trendiest women's bars.
If you've never seen and/or heard them, you'll have the opportunity
at this years Long
Island Pride Parade, where Pandora's Vox will be performing
at the Festival in the Park after the Park afterward! Laura
is lead vocalist for the group, and she also plays aucostic
guitar. She spoke energetically with me about Pandora's Vox,
including how the group got it's name:
"We
were just throwing names around, and Adrienne suggested 'Pandora's
Vox'. We all thought it sounded kind of cool, so it stuck!"
Laura and Adrienne (who plays bass and does harmony vocals)
are the duo known as The Figs, who are incredibly popular
on the gay gal circuit and donated their talents to a variety
of philanthropic causes such as Forevergreen's
Annual Breast Cancer Fund-raiser. The Figs won LIPP's
"Outstanding Group in Music and Song" Award in 2000. The Figs
also released a CD, "Avalanche," which was highly praised
in a New York Newsday review. (See the group's website to
read it!) The review praised the CD's lyrics ("top shelf")
and praised Laura's voice ("powerful"). "Avalanche" won "A's"
for performance, soundwriting, and song quality. The review
also declares the track "Jane" as "bordering on the epic."
The reviewer states, "On the strength of its debut, 'Avalanche',
the Figs... could bury the Indigo Girls if they wanted to!"
This comparison no doubt pleased Laura, who cites The Indigo
Girls as one of her inspirations. Even more of an influence
to Laura is Stevie Nicks. "I heard Stevie when I was a kid,
and I've liked her a lot since then!"
In
November 1999, Laura and Adrienne wanted a full band sound
to compliment their songs. They requested the spirited talents
of a keyboardist, Sharon (Shate'); a drummer, Lisa; and the
sound of electric guitar. After spending time together playing
and recording, the four bandmates realized that they had something
special, and didn't want it to end. Pandora's Vox was born!
Hence the group's nickname, "The Figs Plus Two." And like
the mythical heroine that inspired the band's name, when these
ladies opened up, the world (or at least Long Island's club/bar
scene!) was never the same!
Pandora's
Vox has something many local bands don't have yet-- a very
devoted following. See them perform live, and you'll see one
wild crowd! In the New York Newsday review that I mentioned
before, the reviewer's only critique of The Figs' CD "Avalanche"
was that the music ended too soon! When's the follow-up CD,
ladies?
You
can meet Pandora's Vox and buy "Avalanche" at the parade.
Get the CD autographed by the band...this will be the musical
buried treasure that everyone will be looking for in 5 years!
And check out Pandora's
Vox' VERY hot website, You can see photos, meet the band,
and get the schedule of Pandora Vox' gigs.
