GALFOLI Grants Benefit Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth and the Gay & Lesbian Switchboard of Long Island
by Louis Trapani

The Gay and Lesbian Foundation of Long Island (GALFOLI) best known for being the annual organizer of the highly successful Dock of the Bay Summer Party was established as a foundation to provide funding and fundraising support to other not-for-profit (501(c)(3)) organizations within the Long Island GLBT community. As such, it includes projects and programs by qualified organizations in which enhance the quality of life and/or meet the needs of the Long Island gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered (GLBT) community.

Two recent recipients include Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) and the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard of Long Island (GLSBLI). Each received $5,000 respectively. Both organizations have been providing invaluable services to the Long Island GLBT community for several years now.

The grant to LIGALY was made to assist in the ongoing Long Island Gay-Straight Alliance Network in which LIGALY has been spearheading. The Long Island GSA Network provides leadership training, support, education, and other valuable resources to students and staff members of high schools on Long Island that have a GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) as well as assisting schools that are looking to establish a GSA. The existence of GSAs in schools help to provide youth a safe space, social support, and education which they may not have otherwise.

Another valuable resource within the Long Island GLBT community over the years has been the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard of Long Island. It too was granted with $5,000 by GALFOLI to help aid in the Switchboard's outreach and media efforts which include interactive media as well as advertising in regional and local publications. It will also assist in printed literature produced by the organization detailing its services and volunteering opportunities.

GALFOLI stays devoted to the cause of ensuring that money which it raises in the Long Island GLBT community benefits the people of the community, their family, and friends. Grant applications are currently being accepted (see details at their web site).
