LIGALY Gets A Home of Their Own!
by Louis Trapani

New Building, New Home

This Spring as Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth, Inc. (LIGALY) prepares to enter its tenth year of service across Long Island, it prepares for another major step... moving into a new building. Though this is not just a mere move within the town of Bay Shore, for this marks the first Long Island GLBT agency to own its own building. "A Home of Our Own" is the slogan taken to heart by LIGALY as it first announced the move last February at the Mardi Gras 2002 Party.

For the last seven years LIGALY has been leasing space for their main Center in Bay Shore. The new 4300 square foot building, also in Bay Shore will accommodate the growth of the agency as its services have grown over the years. As with the original location, the new Center will be home to thousands of youth and families, meetings, dances, speakers, and other GLBT organizations. Owned and operated by LIGALY, the new building location offers ample parking, handicap accessible one level design, in addition to increased meeting space and offices.

"It's a major step forward in the development of Long Island's GLBT Community," David Kilmnick, Executive Director of LIGALY indicated. "At our new location, LIGALY will continue its support of other organizations, and expand our services for GLBT youth and their families," he added.

In addition to providing a wide range of comprehensive services and programs, LIGALY also houses the Suffolk Project for AIDS Resource Coordination (SPARC) and the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard of Long Island (GLSB-LI) at its location. Each will be joining LIGALY in the move to the new facility.

The new building is just one of the ways that LIGALY is meeting the new challenges it is facing as it enters into its second decade of service making a difference in the lives of Long Island's GLBT youth and their families and friends.

To kick off LIGALY's Capital Campaign, Robert O. Hawkins, Jr. has pledged a $10,000 matching gift. As LIGALY expands its programs and services, LIGALY urges everyone to join in building the future and be a part of the LIGALY Capital Campaign. For more information on the Capital Campaign, call LIGALY at 631-665-2300.
